asking elected officials to take action
When contacting elected officials, it is important to know what action we are asking for them to take. Here are some of the things we can ask elected officials to speak out on and support:
Dear (insert name),
I am writing to urge you to take action to reduce human suffering immediately. Here are my recommendations:
Permanent ceasefire
Please use your voice to support a permanent ceasefire in order to immediately halt civilian casualties in Palestine. As of February 1, 2024, almost 27,000 people have been murdered in Gaza (2/3 women and children). A human rights group has estimated that 24,000 children in Gaza have already lost at least one parent. The International Court of Justice has deemed it “plausible” that a genocide is taking place in a preliminary decision on January 26, 2024. Without a permanent and immediate ceasefire, we face the imminent elimination of the Palestinian people. The current military actions of Israel, supported by international governments, are creating an increasingly unsafe global environment.
ICC Investigation
Five countries so far have requested the International Criminal Court investigate war crimes being committee in Palestine. I encourage you to use your voice to encourage (insert nationality) elected officials to bring forward and support the investigation of war crimes being committed in Palestine.
Suspend diplomatic relations
South Africa has closed its Israeli embassy and suspended all diplomatic relations until a ceasefire takes place. I encourage you to ask for and support the closure of the Embassy of Israel in (insert country) immediately.
Urge the UN to recognize Palestine
Please urge (insert nationality) elected officials to ask the UN to immediately recognize the state of Palestine with a capital in East Jerusalem and welcome Palestine as a full member of the UN. A peacekeeping force can then be assembled by countries neighbouring Palestine to help provide security in Palestine.
Impose trade sanctions
We can show our commitment to ending genocide via limiting trade with Israel. Both imports and exports to Israel should be immediately suspended. (For Canada: Canada can also terminate the Canada Israel Free Trade Agreement.)
Suspend visa program for Israeli nationals
(Country) can suspend visas for Israeli nationals who are not permanent residents or citizens of (country).
Please use your voice, your platform, your network to be an ambassador, not just for the Palestinian people, but for humanity. We must change the course of history now. We must save innocent lives now. We must act now. Thank you for reading my letter.
Sincerely,
Stand in solidarity

“if you believe in humanity, we will get successful.”
This is a conversation I had with a young Palestinian man living in Jordan in 2015. The sound isn’t great, but please try to listen to the end.
